Men’s Roller Derby

City Square – Banked Track Location in Philly

The home team Juvenile Delinquents faced the Lil’ Devils. The home team defeated the visitors by a score of 45-34 and lead throughout the entire game.

Scoring for the winning Juvenile Delinquents were Kelly Kapowski with a game-high 14 points, Maulin’ Munster with11 points, Roxanne Mudd with 8 points, captain Tasteskate with 7 points and Anna Trocity with 5 points. Scoring for the Lil’ Devils were Lil Debbie Smacks with 13 points, captain Honey Bee with 11 points, Bruise Suede Shooze with 9 points and Edith Brainz with 1 point. Every one of these jammers skated hard with a great amount of tenacity and talent.

The Delinquents and Devils both had girls who weren’t afraid of adding some color to the game. The Delinquents’ Anna Trocity and the Devils’ Lil Debbie Smacks played to the crowd and backed up their smack talkin’ with talent., which not only added interest to the game, it helped motivate their teammates.

On the defensive side, kudos go out to Beatrix R. Forkids who has amazing talent after only a 3 month rookie training program. This program was very effectively run by Penn Jersey veterans’ Classy Chassis and La-T-Bug. Great job ladies!

As always, there were some rookie mistakes, i.e. not looking behind to see the opposing jammer, and a pack that’s not tight or is moving too fast, but these are things they will learn as their skills advance.

Penn Jersey has a great group of new rookies, several of which will be on teams in no time.

The Derby Dozen hosted The Star Spangled Jammers in Mt. Laurel at the International Sports Complex in a very close game that was almost determined in the final jam of the game.

The Star Spangled Jammers won this contest by one point with a final score of 41-40. In the last jam of the game, down 40-34, the Derby Dozen’s co-captain, Wags, scored 6 points which would have tied up the score, but The Star Spangled Jammers’ Maschine scored one point to secure the win for his team.

The game MVP had to be Wags who either skated pivot or jammer in nine out of 10 jams. He was game high scorer with 22 points and virtually a one man show.

The winning Star Spangled Jammers had 6 skaters put up points with high scorer Classy Chassis with 10 points, co-captains Bill Stickley & Lucky Luciano with 7 points each and rookie Honeybee also scoring 7 points. Maschine scored 6 points and Roxanne Mudd scored 4 points.

In addition to Wags’ big 22 points, also scoring for the Derby Dozen were rookie Beater Griffin with 9 points, co-captain Deuces Wild with 6 points, rookie Angry Topaz with 2 points and rookie Kelly Kapowski with 1 point.

Hexadecimate, on loan from South Jersey Derby, was very strong on defense and had a great sense of humor when an opposing skater got her skate caught in her top and nearly pulled it off. She laughed, brushed it off and kept on going.

In the 2nd period, The Derby Dozen’s co-captain, Deuces Wild, leveled Bill Haas with a powerful block leaving Haas laid out on the floor. Deuces was promoted to co-captain status this year and has been a force to be reckoned with.

On another high note, the rookies showed a lot of hustle out there. Kapowski, Angry Topaz, Beater Griffin, Wiggy Smalls, and Honeybee gave it their all with impressive jamming performances.

There’s no school like the old school

With the grass roots explosion of roller derby occurring over the past decade many fans are familiar with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). However, they are not the only derby league on the block. For those die hard derby fans out there you need to check out the Old School Derby Association (OSDA).

According to the OSDA website their mission is to, “restore ties with “Old School” skaters, trainers and coaches from past decades and learn from their experiences and input.” By combining current developments in flat track derby with the old school banked track derby from the 70’s, OSDA hopes to create an exciting game for both the players and the fans. Their website also states, “We believe that it is possible to entertain and inspire a crowd with an aggressive, hard-skated Old School game. OSDA believes that the draw was, is and should continue to be The Game. Pure & simple. No gimmicks – just the incredible skill of the skaters.”

In July of 2009 a new league was formed under the OSDA guidelines. Skating out of Liberty, the Dead Girl Derby KC league is Missouri’s first OSDA league. Founded by Sabra Bunger aka Stormy Trooper and Joei North aka KiKi Yoasis, this league was designed to provide a recreational alternative to the sport in the Kansas City area. They received their OSDA affiliation in early 2010 and have been rapidly growing ever since.

Growing a league is not something that can be done on its own. Dead Girl Derby KC has several opportunities to support the league. If you are interested in becoming a referee, scorekeeper, crew member or a player contact the ladies that run Dead Girl Derby KC by emailing recruiting@deadgirlderbykc.com. Their next game will be held this coming Sunday May 23, 2010 at the Rolladium in Liberty.

On Friday, May 14, 2010, Penn Jersey Roller Derby, along with some additions from South Jersey Roller Derby returned to Ft. Dix to skate for the troops.

The Derby Dozen skated the Star Spangled Jammers in a very close

Game ending in a win for the Star Spangled Jammers with a final score of 34-32.

High scorers for the winning Star Spangled Jammers were Bill Stickley with

14 points and Roxanne Mudd with 13 points. Also scoring for the winners were South Jersey’s Neurotic Nightingale with 3 points, Miss Pat Booty with 2 points and Penn Jersey’s Classy Chassy and rookie Honeybee with 1 point each.

The Derby Dozen came up two points short but had an excellent showing from Mischievous with 12 points. South Jersey’s Beast of Burton scored 7 points, while rookie Beater Griffin had 3 points and South Jersey’s Rex Havoc had 4 points. Wags scored 5 points and Deuces Wild scored 1 point.

This was a defensive game mainly because the track was very slippery, especially the visiting team’s turn where every skater took a spill or two.

Thanks to Lucky Luciano for allowing me the opportunity to keep stats for the Star Spangled Jammers. This closer view of the game gave me a greater appreciation for the skills of the skaters and the difficulties experienced by the referees who make every effort to catch every point and rule infraction. My hat is off to them!

Mobile Roller Derby lost a dear friend, and amazing athlete on April 6, 2010. Robin Martin, aka Southern Belle From Hell, died suddenly in her home six weeks after the birth of her third child, Kyd Martin, a mere month before her 31st birthday. Her husband Chris, an Army veteran who served in Iraq, is left alone caring for Kyd, his brother Zephyn aged two, and their big sister Maddy, aged seven, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Both extended families live in other states. Caring for three children after the death of a spouse is a challenge to begin with, but Maddy requires constant nursing care, and annual surgeries, so Chris can not even sleep in his own bed until he has set up a monitoring system to make sure she can breathe during the night. Finding private care nurses is continously a challenge, even when in possession of a means to pay them, so Chris may not to be able to go back to work at all.
There are over 19,000 Rollergirls in the United States alone! If every one of them gave just ONE dollar, A Buck For Belle, the derby family far and wide could make a tremendous difference in the lives of this family. Having known her personally, we can tell you she was an even more amazing mother and wife than rollergirl, and she was pretty fierce out on the track. Please help us take care of Belle’s babies.
Rest in Peace, Rollergirl. Never forgotten.

ROLLER DERBY TAKES OVER WILDWOOD.

The Colossal Coastal Roller Expo brings skaters from throughout the country to Wildwood, New Jersey May 8-10, 2009.

Wildwood hosts its first official Roller Derby Weekend May 8-10, 2009 complete with hard-hitting games, a parade on the boardwalk and various other skate-inspired festivities. Male and female roller derby skaters from throughout the country are expected to attend the Colossal Coastal Roller Expo (CCRE) hosted by the Wildwood Convention Center, Wildwood Harley-Davidson and the city of Wildwood.

“It looks to be all-out derby mayhem,” said CCRE Chair Billy Rae Siren, “with many different styles of play showcased.”

Tournament play is open to spectators. Tickets will be available March 1 at www.ccrollerexpo.com or through www.ticketmaster.com. Please visit the website for a complete list of events and schedule. Any aspiring or current roller derby skaters should also visit the website for registration and additional information on attending the event.

The Colossal Coastal Roller Expo hopes to bring roller derby to a new audience in South Jersey and pull together skaters from different backgrounds and experiences for one fun-filled, adrenalin-fueled weekend.
