• Penn Jersey Roller Derby (PJRD) is a co-ed roller derby league that is skater-owned and operated. It consists of 4 teams, the Hooligans (our Men’s team), She Devils (women’s travel team) and 2 intra-league women’s teams. PJRD expects to add new women’s teams in the near future.

• PJRD skates monthly games from September to June, with a one-month break in December.

• PJRD is a member of the Old School Derby Association (OSDA). The OSDA’s other member leagues include: Chesapeake Roller Derby (Maryland), Man’s Ruin Roller Derby (New York), Richmond Derby Demons (Virginia), and South Jersey Derby.

• Founded as the Penn Jersey She Devils (PJSD) in 2005 by Ken Sikes and Greg Spencer, ours was the first league to bring roller derby back to the Philadelphia region after almost 30 years. In the interest of better reflecting our co-ed status, the league’s name was updated to Penn Jersey Roller Derby in 2010.

• In the interest of keeping today’s version of derby as close to banked-track rules as possible, Penn Jersey helped found the Old School Derby Association in 2007. OSDA’s rules are designed specifically to keep derby real, rough, and unpredictable – as it should be!

• For the past 5 years, PJRD has skated flat track derby, as do most of the hundred plus leagues around the world. However, we are excited to announce our evolution into the only active banked track league on the east coast, and the only co-ed amateur banked track league in the world!

OSDA Mission Statement

The OSDA was created for those who want to skate something more akin to what the original Roller Derby was like. It is the goal of OSDA & its members to restore ties with “Old School” skaters, trainers and coaches from past decades and learn from their experiences and input. It is our belief that there is a huge untapped fan base out there longing for Roller Derby skated in Old School fashion. OSDA feels that by excluding those legendary Old School skaters and patrons, many find they cannot connect enthusiastically to the sport they used to love.

Old School rules were created by melding many of the current developments in Flat Track Derby with the rules used by Old School Banked Track Roller Derby skaters. These rules were developed by the Penn Jersey She Devils through consultation with representatives from Derby teams from the 70s and we believe add to an exciting game for both the fans & the players.

We believe that it is possible to entertain and inspire a crowd with an aggressive, hard-skated Old School game. OSDA believes that the draw was, is, and should continue to be the game, pure & simple, no gimmicks, just the incredible skill of the skaters.

It is the goal of the OSDA to once again show the beauty of a game that has kept Derby fans Derby fans for years.

Media Coverage, Events, and Exposure

Highlights have included: Segments on NBC10, CN8, Comcast Sportsnet, and an OSDA-wide episode on Food Network’s Dinner Impossible. Our league has also been featured in articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia Metro, the Trentonian, Bucks County Courier Times, Bucks County Midweek, the cover of Philly Fit, and many more. Members of Penn Jersey were also recently featured in the latest music video from CKY, “A#1 Roller Rager”

Penn Jersey has also held multiple events at local Philly establishments such as Drinker’s Tavern, the Barbary, and the Pontiac Grille to drive recruitment and roller derby awareness.  Some of our other events have included:

• Hosting classic roller derby film nights at the Balcony Bar at the Trocadero.
• Having tables at local tattoo and horror conventions, such as Monstermania and Philadelphia Eddie’s Tattoo Arts Convention.
• Throwing numerous ‘Band Showcase’ fundraisers to generate support for local musicians as well as PJRD.
• Participation in Philly and South NJ parades for St. Patrick’s day and other community celebrations

As of January 2010, we are proud to announce that we have a new permanent home in Philadelphia, PA at 19^th and Indiana Streets. Our new facility is a 20,000 square foot warehouse that houses both banked and flat tracks. This space enables us to host our own shows, parties, and events to drive recruitment, awareness, and sponsorship. Located just north of Temple University’s campus, it is easily accessed through public transportation and features private off-street parking. It is our intention to keep banked track roller derby in Philadelphia for years to come. We will be skating our monthly flat track games in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as traveling to other OSDA leagues, with plans to begin skating banked track games before the summer of 2010.

The season opener for the Penn Jersey Roller Derby league took place on Saturday, February 20th at their home in Mt. Laurel – the International Sports Center. The event was called the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and featured a game between The Bleeding Hearts and The Killer Cupids.

The Bleeding Hearts were co-captained by Classy Chassis and Deuces Wild, while The Killer Cupids were co-captained by Lucky Luciano and Shampain. In the end, the Bleeding Hearts defeated the Killer Cupids by a score of 61 to 48. Although it doesn’t look it, the score was very close for more than half of the game and it wasn’t until a jam in the final period that saw the Bleeding Hearts score 12 big points and pull away for good.

There are many good points to this game that must be mentioned. The defense was excellent. This was a true Old School style Roller Derby game from all angles. I’ve said it before; Derby is the sum of all parts – offense, defense and strategy. This game featured all of the above.

The teams were equally staffed by veterans and rookies. The rookies were being tested to see if they could hang with the veterans and they did extremely well. They skated a hard game and Bexi Wrexi was the highest scoring rookie with 12 points.

Announcing was handled by Henry Rollins who is an ace at the mic and newcomer FoXXXy Contin who did an excellent announcing job. The league has all bases covered with Henry, Rhonda, FoXXXy, Judy Sowinski and founder Ken Sikes at the mic.

A big Welcome Home to Vidal Boom Boom who returned to the PJRD and skated in her first game in over a year. Unfortunately, she lived up to her name – Boom Boom and went down hard on her elbow. Turns out she broke off the cap of the elbow and it required surgery to repair it. Heal quickly Boom Boom. You’ll be missed out there!

High scorers were Sloppy Jo with 28 points for the Killer Cupids, Hellanor Rollsevelt with 26 point and Miss Chievous with 19 points for the winning Bleeding Hearts.

After this excellent game and with the addition of a banked track and warehouse in Philadelphia, the future looks very bright indeed for Penn Jersey Roller Derby.

Today, April 5, would have been the 106th birthday of Roller Derby’s creator, LEO SELTZER. A visionary and promoter, Leo came up with the idea of the banked track sport, men and women competing on an equal basis, and it was only because of Seltzer that Roller Derby became a reality. Leo Seltzer saw Roller Derby become the talk of the nation, saw it become overexposed on TV, lose its luster, then rise again thru the efforts of his son, Jerry, and he would have been delighted with how a version of his game has once again created so much excitement around the country. Anyone who loves the game, no matter how it is played or executed, admires what Leo Seltzer brought forth.

Happy birthday to Roller Derby’s founding father, Leo Seltzer.

Little did I know how fortunate we would become as an offer to help us out occasionally became a full time coach. And then she brought on Skip Schoen.   And the luck just continued. But more important than the She Devils and the Old School Derby Associations professional luck was my personal luck. I can honestly say that I’m proud to call both Judy & Skip my friends & surrogate family. So once again I say Happy Birthday to the Red Shirt who had faith in me long ago. I hope to some day make you as proud of me as I am of you.

Henry Rollin has been skating with the Hooligans since early 2007. He skated in the Hooligans debut public scrimmage with the Diamond City Death Kings. Henry is known for great spin whips and double blocks along with his team captain Bobbie Carnage. Henry (Chello)’s number is the symbol from the classic punk band, Black Flag led by singer Henry Rollins.

Henry Rollin also referees OSDA games for PJSD.

So Skip has skated for quite some time and for quite a few teams in his distinguished career.

yourself:________I am the OSDA Web Master and OSDA Men’s Derby
Coordinator. I have been a member of the Hooligans since team’s
inception in 2007. I am an Industrial/80s/Gothic DJay. I play
various instruments in several industrial bands. My skater name is an
industrial song title. I changed my skater name from Deutschmaschine
to D-Maschine to Maschine, because of announcer difficulties with the
German language. I share the #15 with my wife, Hard Licker. I want
to skate REAL old school banked track co-ed alternating period roller
derby.

Favorite Drink:_______Sweetened Ice Tea, No Alcohol

Why did you join derby:___The men’s team formed after watching my wife
skate for a year, it looked like fun and even though I never roller
skated before I started training with the team in Bensalem, PA. At
the time we were driving down from Woodbridge, NJ. Seeing real pros
like Skip and Judy training the skaters made PJSD the only choice and
I am glad we chose PJSD.

Idea of the perfect date:__Skating, Gourmet dinner, a romantic stroll
on Caribbean beach, a private jacuzzi

Favorite Activity:________roller derby, roller soccer, skating,
playing in my band, DJaying, renaissance faires

Worst Derby Injury:_____Knee injury in our first game in 2007 against
Diamond City and track burn from the Superman dive at Mt Laurel

Favorite Game:________Any game at Fort Dix, I love playing for our
troops and their families.
